Scott R. Owens, MD, is a board-certified pathologist and professor specializing in gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary pathology at the University of Michigan Medical School. He currently serves as the Director of the Division of Quality and Health Improvement and the Medical Director of Professional Practice Evaluation within the Department of Pathology. In these leadership roles, he focuses on enhancing the patient experience by integrating diagnostic laboratory expertise with quality management and value-based healthcare initiatives.Â
Dr. Owens earned his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1999 before completing his residency and specialized fellowships in surgical pathology, hematopathology, and gastrointestinal pathology at Michigan Medicine. His clinical and research interests primarily involve inflammatory bowel disease, pancreaticobiliary neoplasia, and hematolymphoid neoplasms of the digestive tract. He has contributed to over 60 peer-reviewed publications and books, including a co-authored atlas on surgical pathology. Recent research from 2025 includes studies on the impact of patient-centered pathology reports on diagnostic clarity and patient worry.Â
In addition to his clinical and administrative duties, Dr. Owens is an active medical educator who teaches pathology basics to medical students and residents.
