Dr. Mirza graduated from Aitchison College, Lahore, Pakistan in 1998, where he received the “Rivaz Gold Medal” for academic and extracurricular excellence. He completed his medical degree at Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan in 2003. Immigrating to the USA in 2005, he completed his Ph.D. (2006-2010) at the University of Illinois at Chicago under Professor Asrar B. Malik, focusing on lung and vascular biology.
Dr. Mirza went on to complete AP/CP Pathology residency at the University of Chicago, serving as Chief Resident. During training, he received pathologist-in-training awards from the Society of Pediatric Pathology, the Society for Ultrastructural Pathology, the Society for Cardiovascular Pathology, and the Society of Pediatric Pathology’s A. James McAdams Study Stipend. He also completed fellowships in hematopathology and thoracic pathology at the University of Chicago under Dr. James Vardiman and Dr. Aliya Husain, respectively, and a fellowship in Medical Education Research, Innovation, Teaching & Scholarship (MERITS). He joined the faculty at Loyola University Health System in 2015 as Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor, Vice-Chair of Education and Academic Affairs, and Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in 2020. At Loyola, he also served as the hematopathology fellowship director. Dr. Mirza was recruited to Michigan Medicine in 2024.
Dr. Mirza has received several awards and honors, including the 2023 ASCP Michele Raible Named Lectureship. He was an inaugural inductee into the Association of Pathology Chairs Academy of Distinguished Pathology Educators in 2023. He is the recipient of the 2022 Association of Pathology Chairs Michele Raible Award for Distinguished Education, the 2021 H. P. Smith Award for Distinguished Pathology Educator from the American Society for Clinical Pathology, the 2021 College of American Pathologist’s Pathology Advancement Award, the 2020 CAP Resident Advocate Award, and the 2019 ASCP Mentorship Award. He received both the regional and the national M. Brownell Anderson Award for New and Emerging Educators in 2020 by AAMC/GGEA and was a Top 5 Forty Under Forty honoree by the American Society of Clinical Pathology in 2017. He was a faculty inductee of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society at Loyola Medicine and has been featured in The Pathologist magazine’s Power List 100 for six consecutive years.
Dr. Mirza is a member of the Board of Directors of ASCP, the current chair of the CGEA and a member of the APC UMEDs council. He serves as an Associate Editor for the American Society of Hematology’s Image Bank and is an advisor for the “Inside the Match” and “Match to Path” platforms.
Dr. Mirza co-founded PathElective.com, a free educational website in pathology, ASCP’s Virtual Pathology Grand Rounds, the PathPod podcast, the PATH_SIG virtual pathology student interest group, www.hemereports.com, and the Digital Communications Fellowship in Pathology. Dr. Mirza’s advocacy for pathology, patients, and trainees is highlighted on his social media channels (X: @KMirza, lnstagram and TikTok: @KamPathDoc)
